Apartment hos Hanne Bach
In the middle of a big city. A peaceful residential street in Copenhagen - and a real oasis. At the entrance to the house, there is a large garden table with small perennials and ornamental flowers, which can be bought for just a few kroner. Hanne likes to help others. And she has a big heart for flowers, so she likes to share them.
I have come to visit Hanne Bach and her husband Gunnar. Hanne and Gunnar bought the house at Ingolfs Alle on Amager in central Copenhagen 25 years ago - without thinking, that later in life they would invite guests from all over the world to visit and stay in their home.
Hanne and Gunnar have always traveled a lot, and as soon as the opportunity arose, they chose to stay at Bed and Breakfast or private accommodation. The couple enjoys the personal service and decor, that the small accommodations invite to.
When Hanne and Gunnar in the late 90s bought the house at Ingolfs Alle, it was a project they invested in - in every way. The house had to be renovated from basement to attic. And they chose the careful approach to the task. The work didn’t have to be finished tomorrow - they took the time that was needed.
In 2009, the couple went on holiday to Scotland - and stayed during the entire trip at a Bed and Breakfast. On a cozy winter evening at home, later that year, Hanne suddenly says to Gunnar: Why don’t we do a Bed and Breakfast?
Gunnar let the sentence hang in the air for a while before he answered - yeeees - we can do that.
After 12 years of renovation, they had managed to make the basement floor fit for purpose. It was almost finished, but if the idea of Bed and Breakfast was to be implemented, the lower floor would have to be adjusted a bit before, it would be an optimal option. Gunnar started making a website and soon the bookings started coming in.
In 2010, the couple started their Bed and Breakfast. Hanne and Gunnar’s first guests were Aksel and Emma, who came from Jutland for a night or two in the house. Hanne and Gunnar were excited and hoped that it would be a good experience for the guests - and themselves. And it was.
From the start, Hanne and Gunnar chose an open approach towards their guests. All have access to the garden and terraces.
Hanne and Gunnar’s experience has always been that it is a joy - to open and share their home, and it always goes smoothly. People are nice, positive and helpful when they come here, says Hanne. And, of course, so are we as the host couple.
In the summer, we have many families visiting. And they are happy about the extra bedroom, which is directly connected to the living room and the second bedroom. If it is a couple or a businessman visiting, they naturally have the whole apartment to themselves.
Someone might think: Basement flat - hmmm - it’s probably dark and scary... I can just say that it’s not like that. There are many windows with a view of the beautiful, beautiful garden - with a floral splendor you can’t even imagine. Everything is bright and friendly - with really good beds - where you sleep like a rock.
The villa is just a few hundred meters from one of Copenhagen’s busiest streets, namely Amagerbrogade. But if you sit in the garden, you will find birdsong and peace.
The central location means that in just 10 minutes you are standing at Rådhuspladsen or at the main railway station. So if you’re going to Copenhagen, I can highly recommend a visit to Hanne and Gunnar.
