Toldbodhus or custom house is a beautiful and distinctive town house from the 1700s. It is located in the middle of Ærø on the north coast in Ærøskøbing , with its roots back to the early Middle Ages. From Toldbodhus there is ample opportunity to experience the city's picturesque and distinctive facades. If you see a drawing of Ærøskøbing from the 1700s, it looks exactly as it is today with cobbled streets, old street lamps and wellpreserved houses. Many consider the city to be the bestpreserved 1,700-century city, and indeed the city in 2002 was awarded the prestigious Europa Nostra award for conservation of European cultural heritage.
The location is ideal, since Toldbodhus is in the city center and only 2 min. from the ferry. It is near the famous doll and bottle Peters Collection, and restaurants and beaches are within walk-ing distance, The hosts Karin and John Steenberg have not regretted for a second, that they settled on this spot with the view over the archipelago after 12 years abroad. - We now enjoy nature, tranquility and beauty of island life to the full. I almost always recommend to our guests a tour of Voderup cliffs, there is a unique coastal landscape from the ice age with big green ledges, where you can see the sea and the waves. I would compare it to a Scottish landscape, says Karin Steenberg. She characterizes an Ærø-bo” as helpful, warm and friendly, which has contributed to their happiness at living on the island. - It is our hope, that we can pass on this atmosphere to our guests, says Karin Steenberg.
The hosts emphasize, that their guests should feel at home and very welcome. Most have too many distraction in everyday life and need to unwind and relax. Peace and harmony are very important priorities of Karin and John Steenberg. They enjoy chatting with customers so much, that they do not have radio and TV in the rooms. They have decorated their four beautiful rooms based on the places, they have lived in during their 12 years abroad - 3 years in London, 6 years in Hong Kong and 3 years in Amsterdam and Copenhagen. The four large rooms are decorated with furniture in English, Dutch and Chinese styles, one room has own bathroom, and the other three rooms share 2 bathrooms. - We have made it cozy with bathrobes and slippers in all rooms, and there is something interesting to see in every corner. Something many of our guests enjoy, says Karin. She emphasizes the importance of breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice and British Egg Coddlers and not least the charming quaint rooms, something our customers appreciate. Breakfast is served in the cozy breakfast room or weather permitting on the patio. This is located in a beautiful old conventlike garden, surrounded by walls and garden furniture and sun loungers on the lawn, and with that relaxed atmosphere is complete there.
